Implications of a subdivision proposal near an important shorebird breeding site

چکیده

This report contains abridged evidence given at a hearing. The Minister of Conservation had objected to a proposed District Plan Change which would have sanctioned extensive subdivision near the Waipu Spit Wildlife Refuge. The Minister's evidence focused on natural values of the area, including wildlife values, history of management at the site, and the implications of the proposed subdivision should it proceed. This report covers the latter evidence. It may be of use in developing similar cases for minimising impact on shorebirds elsewhere in New Zealand

Mercury concentration in the eggs of four Canadian Arctic-breeding shorebirds not predicted based on their population statuses

Methylmercury is a toxic form of mercury which persists in food webs for long periods of time and biomagnifies up successive trophic levels. Shorebirds breeding in the Arctic are exposed to methylmercury, derived from both natural and anthropogenic sources, when they ingest their invertebrate prey. Populations of many shorebird species are believed to be declining and one hypothesis for these d...

Global - Scale Shorebird Distribution in Relation to Productivity of Near - Shore Ocean Waters

-The median density of shorebirds during their non-breeding season on the coast of South America was significantly greater in coastal zones with high primary productivity than in zones with moderate and low primary productivity. A world-wide review showed that sites harboring large numbers of wintering and migratory shorebirds corresponded significantly with regions of high coastal zone product...

Numerical Response of Migratory Shorebirds to Prey Distribution in a Large Temperate Arid Wetland, China

Wuliangsuhai Lake provides important breeding and stopover habitats for shorebirds. The health of this wetland ecosystem is rapidly deteriorating due to eutrophication and water pollution and environmental management is urgently needed. To explore the connections among ecosystem health, prey density, and shorebird populations, we conducted surveys of both the benthic macroinvertebrates and shor...

Long‐term continental changes in wing length, but not bill length, of a long‐distance migratory shorebird

We compiled a >50-year record of morphometrics for semipalmated sandpipers (Calidris pusilla), a shorebird species with a Nearctic breeding distribution and intercontinental migration to South America. Our data included >57,000 individuals captured 1972-2015 at five breeding locations and three major stopover sites, plus 139 museum specimens collected in earlier decades. Wing length increased b...

Sex-biases in distribution and resource use at different spatial scales in a migratory shorebird

In migratory species, sexual size dimorphism can mean differing energetic requirements for males and females. Differences in the costs of migration and in the environmental conditions occurring throughout the range may therefore result in sex-biases in distribution and resource use at different spatial scales. In order to identify the scale at which sexual segregation operates, and thus the sca...
